Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund won on the same night, by the same score, and remain locked together at the top of the Bundesliga. Bayern won 2-1 at Mainz, while Dortmund beat Elversberg 2-1 at the Signal Iduna Park. After nine rounds both clubs have 21 points, and only goal difference keeps the defending champions in first place.
Kane the provider, Kimmich the scorer in Mainz
With Vincent Kompany still absent as he recovers from his recent collapse, Bayern went ahead after 14 minutes. Harry Kane laid the ball off to Joshua Kimmich on the edge of the box and the midfielder struck home his first goal of the season. It meant a lot to him. Kimmich had just returned from leave following the death of his father. "I don't score that many anyway," he said afterwards, before describing Kane as "one of the reasons why things just click in the dressing room."
Mainz thought they had equalised before the break when Lee Jae-sung headed in at the far post, but VAR ruled it out for offside. Bayern then created chance after chance. Mainz goalkeeper Robin Zentner kept out efforts from Nathaniel Brown and Kimmich, Alphonso Davies had a shot cleared off the line and Dayot Upamecano hit the crossbar.
The second goal came on 57 minutes. Kane's shot was blocked, the ball dropped back to him and he set up Lennart Karl, who finished calmly. Phillip Tietz headed one back for Mainz in stoppage time, far too late to worry Bayern.
A record night for Neuer ends in injury
Manuel Neuer had a strange evening. At 40 years and 225 days, the goalkeeper became the oldest player in Bayern's history, on his 550th appearance for the club. He did not make it to half-time. Neuer took a knock to his foot just after the disallowed Mainz goal and was replaced by Jonas Urbig. Bayern have not said how long he will be out, and the international break comes at a good time for him.
The treatment room is still busy in Munich. Jamal Musiala, Luis Diaz, Ismael Saibari and Serge Gnabry all missed the game. Even so, Bayern remain unbeaten in the league (six wins, three draws) with a goal difference of +20, and their run without an away defeat in the Bundesliga now stands at 31 games. This was no routine win either: Bayern had won only three of their previous seven league trips to Mainz.
Kane goes three games without a goal since the Ballon d'Or
The only talking point around Kane was the empty column. Since collecting the Ballon d'Or in late October, the England captain has now gone three games without scoring. He dragged one long-range effort wide and sent another over the bar. His two assists still showed how much Bayern's attack runs through him. Across all competitions this season he has 10 goals and 10 assists, and on Thursday he signed a contract extension until 2029. Bayern also came into the weekend on the back of a 2-0 win away at Atletico Madrid in the Champions League.
